Having a study in your home is an incredibly productive use of your time and money. While not everyone has one, it’s definitely a project that could be tackled within a year’s time. And the thing is, a study doesn’t have to be written off as a luxury that most homeowners can’t afford. Because it’s not expensive and it’s not hard to do. The problem is that people say they lack the time or prefer not to work on their home. Really, it doesn’t even take putting on an addition to your home. More than anything, you just have to reevaluate the rooms you have and sacrifice one of your storage rooms, guest bedrooms, or even the basement in order to really get to work on creating your own personal library, office space, and reading room all in one. Furniture Adding an armchair is exactly what’s needed in a proper study. While some people like loveseats or couches in their offices (and I do at my work office), there’s nothing quite like a sturdy yet comfortable armchair specifically for reading. In fact, it’s the armchair that’s the sign of class and luxury that so many people immediately think of when they imagine a true study. The trick is to getting a classic and embroidered armchair for cheap. (Because it doesn’t have to be an amazing or high-end brand.) Mixing cart If you really want to show off or pamper yourself and feel good about your top-notch study, get yourself a liquor cart with highball glasses, mixing tools, and all your favorite drinks and mixers. There’s nothing better than sipping on your favorite cocktail or liquor neat while reading something you really enjoy. Books and supplies What’s a complete study without enough office and shipping supplies? You’ll obviously want to keep this stuff out of sight (because the main focus is your library of books). Just put these things in your drawers or cabinets and you’ll be good to go. Having supplies at the ready when you need them beats the heck out of not having exactly what it is you need when writing a friend or even keeping notes in a journal. You may think you won’t need things like shipping supplies, but packing tape, sharpies, envelopes, and even labels are quite useful when you need them. Overall, your study is meant to be your getaway within your home. Make it true to you and what you value and that’s all that will matter.

My favorite gifts over the recent holidays may come as a surprise to most, to be honest. While I got some notable things I asked for like Brazilian sneakers, some reverse suspenders that hold dress shirts in your pants, and even some much needed jeans, the things I was most impressed by and surely will get the most use out of were kitchen tools, shipping supplies, and other assorted office supplies. So, why would these be my favorite gifts I received over the past few months? Why something as “bland” or plain as mere supplies that could be considered commonplace items? Well, that’s why. Because, as an adult now, I find far more joy out of the things that are incredibly useful around the house rather than something that will see a few weeks’ use and then be old and not fun anymore (like some video games or other technology). The thing is, the value increases of these everyday items that will help me from day to day. I already know I’ll be much more organized in general because of it all. I’ll pick up the apartment more often and be cleaner in general. And all this stuff? Well, it’ll lead to a happier mindset and a much more productive lifestyle. The thing is, I actually seemed to enjoy other gifts like this that I would get a lot of actual use out of. The clothes, shoes, music, and other things I received which I really enjoy having aren’t necessarily of much use, per se. I realize that it’s awesome to get new things that make us feel better instantly, such as concert tickets, video games, other technology, new clothes, an experience, or a nice bottle of bourbon. But it’s the useful items that allow me to really get a lot of mileage out of them. Heck, even the things I got for my kitchen like a mini charcuterie board, a recipe box, and mini shot glasses just seemed more welcome than things that were superficial by nature. It’s the shipping supplies, kitchen accessories, and other general office supplies within the lot of our gifts that we should learn to appreciate and even ask for in the coming years.
Just make sure you’re getting use and fun out of the gifts you have. Otherwise, what’s the point in exchanging all kinds of gifts? Don’t let your gifts (given or received) be just another item that sits on someone’s shelf unopened. |
